R16,000 petrol fraud lands cop in jail
Tlhabane/ Rustenburg – A police officer allegedly connived with a petrol attendant in fraudulent activities which robbed the government of about R16,000 worth of fuel.
Sergeant Moses Moeketsi and Susan Malunga were both arrested on Tuesday 22 March for fraud relating to state-owned motor vehicles and petrol cards.
The two, who allegedly used petrol cards of three state-owned vehicles to claim fuel exceeding the number of kilometres actually travelled, appeared before the Bafokeng Magistrates’ Court in Tlhabane on 23 March.
The suspects, who allegedly committed these crimes from March to June 2021, were charged on 14 counts of fraud and one of defeating the ends of justice.
Said police spokesperson brigadier Sabata Mokgwabone: “They would, after successfully claiming the money through fictitious transactions, share the cash between them.”
Moeketsi and Malunga are expected to appear again before the court on Tuesday 5 April 2022. It was not immediately clear if Moeketsi, who was stationed in Lethabong, would still be carrying out his duties as a police officer during the court appearances.
North West provincial commissioner lieutenant general Sello Kwena applauded the anti-corruption investigation unit (ACIU) for the arrests and commitment in the fight against fraud and corruption.
