    Tragedy at favourite holiday resort

Buffelspoort – What was supposed to be dream holiday soon turned into a nightmare for the Brits family, when Johannes Nicolaas Brits (68) was fatally shot at ATKV-Buffelspoort in the early hours of Thursday 17 February.

Three intruders gained access to the family’s chalet at around 1am. They overpowered some of the family members and fired shots at them. Brits was hit and passed away on the scene.

The resort issued a statement in which they expressed their condolences to the family of the deceased. “Although ATKV-Buffelspoort cannot comment at this stage on exactly how the attackers gained access to the chalet, the ATKV is working closely with the local police and the community policing forum to investigate the matter.

“Please note that the resort is functioning normally, is open to visitors and that further safety measures are being put in place to further strengthen security at the resort,” the statement reads.

ATKV marketing manager Reinard du Plessis confirmed that the total fence of the resort has been re-checked and they can confirm that no damage was done to the fence and that no wires were cut. He says that the electrification of all zones at ATKV-Buffelspoort is in a good working condition and that additional guards are being appointed to patrol the resort.

Police spokesperson colonel Adéle Myburgh confirmed that Marikana police are investigating a case of murder and robbery. Any person who can assist the police with their investigation is requested to contact the investigating officer adjutant officer Job Monnagaratoe on 072 092 2348.

A concerned community member told the Platinum Weekly: “We must not let the criminals take our favourite holiday resort. Seeing that the intruders did not gain access through the fence, they must have come through the entrance to the resort.

It would help if the ATKV could give their staff colour coded wrist bands to wear, which are only given out by a responsible person.

The colour should be changed without prior notice. As a visitor to the resort, I would also not mind wearing a wrist band every day. It might just help to save a life. Placing a camera or two at strategic points would also help.”
