    Businessowners caught selling stolen goods

Rustenburg – The law caught up with businesspeople selling stolen second-hand goods during a police crimefighting operation on Friday 18 February.

The operation, which was conducted from 08:00 until 14:00, targeted unscrupulous businesspeople operating in and around the Rustenburg CBD. The multidisciplinary crackdown also involved personnel from the Department of Home Affairs, Telkom and the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA).

“Fines amounting to R25,000 were issued to 19 business owners. The fines were issued for the possession of counterfeit goods and a failure to register a business as a dealer in contravention of Section 2(1) of the Second-Hand Goods, Act 2009,” police spokesperson colonel Adéle Myburgh said. Three persons were arrested for possession of suspected stolen property.

Myburgh advised second-hand goods dealers to comply with the law by ensuring their businesses are registered. “A dealer must also keep a record of every acquisition or disposal of second-hand goods according to the law,” Myburgh added.
